Sri Lanka has issued regulations covering boats, yachts and visiting leisure craft after consulting with stakeholders and working with Lloyds Register Asia, the island’s Export Development Board said.
“There has been a gap in regulating leisure craft operations and managing the registration of visiting yachts, posing challenges to the industry’s growth,” EDB said.“A well-established regulatory framework covering the entire value chain is necessary,”
The EDB said it worked with M/S Lloyds Register Asia to develop the necessary regulations.“After completing the necessary procedural steps, the Merchant Shipping Secretariat, under the Ministry of Ports and Shipping has made arrangements to gazette the regulations under the Merchant Shipping Act, No.52 of 1971.”
The regulations cover, insurance, crew and safety requirements for vessels According to the new gazette, vessels built in accordance with an equivalent to the rules of the Standard Classification Society rule as specified in the Technical Codes shall be acceptable under these regulations, subject to complying with all other requirements of the Codes.
