A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit near the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East today. The earthquake happened about 126 km from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and was felt strongly in nearby areas.
The quake caused tsunami warnings in several countries, including Japan, the United States, and Guam.
In Russia, tsunami waves of 3 to 4 metres were reported in Kamchatka. No deaths have been reported so far, but one kindergarten building was damaged. The governor of Kamchatka said this was the strongest earthquake in many years.
After the quake, Japan warned people living near the Pacific coast to move to higher ground immediately. Small tsunami waves, around 30–40 cm high, have already reached parts of Hokkaido, and bigger waves of up to 3 metres are expected.
In the United States, officials issued a tsunami warning for Hawaii. People in Honolulu and other coastal areas were told to evacuate quickly. The US also gave tsunami alerts for California, Oregon, and Washington, but no evacuation orders were issued there.
Guam and Alaska are also on tsunami watch. Experts say waves could reach between 1 and 3 metres high in these areas, and several waves may come over the next 10 to 36 hours.
It is one of the strongest earthquakes in the world in recent history, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Scientists say this earthquake is as strong as the one in Chile in 2010 and Ecuador in 1906.
People in all affected areas are asked to stay alert and follow official instructions until the warnings are lifted.
