President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has pledged to increase the daily wage of plantation workers to Rs. 1,750 before the end of this year, reaffirming his government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of the upcountry estate community.
He made this announcement at a ceremony in Bandarawela, where over 2,000 housing title deeds were distributed under the fourth phase of the 10,000-housing project implemented with Indian assistance. The project aims to provide land and home ownership to long-marginalized plantation families.
Addressing the gathering, President Dissanayake emphasized that the plantation community has been a “pillar of labor” in Sri Lanka’s economy for over two centuries, yet continues to face social and economic hardships.
“As a government, we bear the responsibility of ensuring that every worker receives fair compensation and lives with dignity,” he said, stressing that the long-demanded Rs. 1,750 daily wage will be realized within this year.
The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions with plantation companies and trade unions over wage reforms, signaling a major policy shift aimed at reducing inequality and uplifting living standards across the plantation sector.
