President to Visit Japan, Address UN in September

Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will make an official visit to Japan in the first week of September, followed by a trip to the United States later in the month, government officials confirmed.

During his Japan visit, Dissanayake is expected to discuss strengthening bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and investment opportunities with Tokyo. Japan remains a key development partner for Sri Lanka, and recent high-level talks have focused on reviving stalled infrastructure projects, enhancing maritime cooperation, and exploring green energy and technology investments. Tokyo has welcomed the new administration’s push for anti-corruption measures and institutional reforms, viewing it as a step toward rebuilding trust.

In the latter part of September, the President will attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where he is scheduled to address the assembly on September 24. Officials say his participation reflects a more constructive approach toward the UN, particularly on human rights, sustainable development, and climate action.

The government has recommitted to UN frameworks, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and is seeking increased cooperation from UN agencies in areas such as transitional justice, governance reform, and poverty alleviation.

This will be Dissanayake’s seventh official overseas visit since taking office, following trips to India, China, the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Germany, and the Maldives, marking a proactive foreign policy aimed at deepening strategic partnerships and engaging with global institutions.
