The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to suspend Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya over allegations of the unauthorised release of inmates under the pretence of a Presidential pardon.
Upuldeniya was questioned for more than 10 hours yesterday (8) by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as part of the ongoing investigations.
The inquiry follows a complaint filed by the Presidential Secretariat, alleging that the Presidential pardon was misused to facilitate the unlawful release of certain prisoners.
The Assistant Commissioner of Anuradhapura Prison was arrested by the CID yesterday in connection with the release of an inmate from the Anuradhapura Prison on Vesak Poya Day, allegedly under the guise of a Presidential pardon that had not been granted.
