The Fort Magistrate’s Court has still not made a decision on former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s bail, which remains pending due to a power cut in the court premises. He appeared today under the custody of the CID.
Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura initially paused court proceedings for 30 minutes, but the power cut extended the delay to more than an hour while deciding whether to grant bail or remand the former president.
A large crowd gathered outside the Colombo courthouse, attracting attention both locally and internationally. Security was tightened as supporters, media, and onlookers filled the area
Wickremesinghe was arrested today, 22 August 2025, shortly after arriving to give a statement in an ongoing investigation.
The case involves his visit to the UK during his presidency for his wife, Professor Maithree Wickramasinghe’s graduation, where he is alleged to have used state funds for personal expenses.
Opposition leaders, including Namaka Rajapaksa, were present. This is the first time a former Sri Lankan president has been arrested, drawing significant international attention.
