The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology has warned the public to be alert for strong winds and dangerous sea conditions, as per the report issued, valid until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow (Sunday, July 20).
Accordingly, strong winds between 50 to 60 km/h are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-Western, and North-Central provinces, due to the active southwest monsoon.
Other parts of the country may also experience fairly strong winds between 30 to 40 km/h at times.
The Department warned that gusty winds could cause damage to roofing materials, power and communication lines, and tree branches, and may also harm crops such as paddy, banana, and papaya plantations. Minor coastal flooding in low-lying areas is also possible.
In parallel, a Red-level marine weather warning was issued for sea areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota.
These areas are expected to be rough to very rough, with gusty winds up to 70 km/h and wave heights of 2.5 to 3.0 metres. Coastal surges and sea flooding are possible, the Meteorology Department noted.
Naval and fishing communities have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea in the affected zones during this period. Vessels operating in sea areas from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai are also urged to remain cautious and closely monitor official updates.
The Department of Meteorology has urged the public to take necessary precautions, stay indoors during high wind periods, and stay alert for further bulletins. Local disaster management units remain on standby to respond to any emergencies arising from the inclement weather.
For emergency assistance, the public is encouraged to contact their nearest Disaster Management Centre.
