Seevali Arukgoda appointed as new customs chief

Sri Lanka Customs has appointed Additional Director General Seevali Arukgoda as its new Director General with effect from  today, August 26, 2025, making him the 45th head of the institution.

Mr. Arukgoda, who began his career in 1989 as an Assistant Superintendent, has achieved the rare distinction of being the first officer in the Department’s history to rise through every rank to reach the top post.

During his 36 years of service, he has earned recognition both locally and internationally, particularly through his close association with the World Customs Organization (WCO). As an accredited WCO expert, he served two terms with the Organization, contributing to major global initiatives in customs modernization and border management.

Mr. Arukgoda holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Buckinghamshire New University in the United Kingdom and a Master’s Degree in Customs Administration from the Postgraduate Institute of Management, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

Sri Lanka Customs, in its official announcement, commended his long-standing service and international expertise, noting that his leadership is expected to strengthen the institution’s role in global trade facilitation and revenue protection.
