SLN, SLAF begin joint maritime exercise

The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) commenced its annual naval exercise, Trincomalee Naval Exercise 2025 (TRINEX–25), at the Naval Dockyard in Trincomalee on Monday 22, July under the patronage of Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Ravindra Tissera.

The exercise, which will continue until 26 July, is taking place in Trincomalee Harbour and the eastern seas, bringing together a range of naval and air assets, including capital ships, Fast Attack Craft, the elite Special Boat Squadron, Navy Marines, and aircraft from the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).

TRINEX–25 aims to enhance interoperability and combat readiness between the Navy and the Air Force. The exercise is designed to prepare SLN ships for operational challenges and ensure they meet required standards for future local and international fleet missions.

The exercise is being conducted in two phases: the harbour phase and the sea phase. The harbour phase, which began on 22 July, includes briefings on communication protocols and security procedures, encouraging coordination and knowledge-sharing between SLN and SLAF personnel.

The sea phase will be held from 23 to 26 July in eastern waters, focusing on operational demonstrations and tactical drills. The final day of the exercise is scheduled for 27 July.

TRINEX–25 includes a series of exercises such as Surface Target Firing (SUFTX), Screening Exercises (SCREENEX), Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP), Flashing Exercises (FLASHEX), Gunnery Exercises (GUNNEX), Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS), Helicopter Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (HVBSS), Search and Rescue (SAREX), Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC), and other maritime operations.
