Sri Lanka Aviation Sees 14% Passenger Growth in 2025

Sri Lanka’s air travel industry continues its steady rebound, with Airport and  Aviation Services(Sri Lanka) (Private) Limited

(AASL) reporting a 14.08% increase in international passenger movements and a 15.35% rise in aircraft operations during the first nine months of 2025.

A total of 7.56 million passengers passed through Bandaranaike, Mattala, and Jaffna international airports from January to September, including 1.7 million tourists. The AASL expects to handle over 10 million passengers by year-end, marking a strong recovery though still below the 2018 pre-crisis peak of 10.88 million.

While passenger and flight numbers are up, cargo volumes have fallen 4%, mirroring weaker global trade. AASL said new airline schedules, expanded routes, and infrastructure upgrades — including BIA’s ongoing expansion are driving the resurgence, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s ambition to become a key aviation hub in South Asia.
