Sri Lanka coconut prices drop 6.8-pct at auction

Sri Lanka coconut prices declined at a weekly auction, Coconut Development Authority (CDA) weekly auction data showed.

Average coconut prices were down 6.8 percent, at 135,731.72 per 1,000 nuts at the auction held on March 14, from 145,345.74 the previous year.Prices rose following the lift of a price cap that was imposed last month.

Sri Lanka’s coconut auction volumes declined this week, with 243,247 nuts offered and 178,309 nuts sold, CDA data showed.The coconut shortage to be blamed on technical and administrative issues, Chairman of the Coconut Cultivation Board Sunimal Jayakody has said.

Volumes rose after the lift of the 140 price cap. However, a decline in offered and sold nuts was seen.The highest price was 149,000 for 1,000 nuts while the lowest was 125,000 for 1,000 nuts.

Ahead of the island nation’s major holiday season in April, coconuts are retailing at 205 to 220 rupees a nut at supermarkets, steeply rising from 174-190 rupees a nut a week ago.Wholesale prices for large nuts were 190-210 and rupees for small nuts were 170-180 on March 17.
