Sri Lanka Courts Chinese Investors with Land Leases and Strategic Opportunities

Sri Lankan officials have pledged land on a lease basis and necessary infrastructure to a visiting Chinese business delegation exploring investments in key sectors including vehicle assembly, rubber and chemical industries, tourism, agriculture, gems and jewellery, and mineral products.

The two-week visit aims to strengthen bilateral economic ties, with discussions held on May 28 at the Ministry of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development. Minister Sunil Handunnetti highlighted Sri Lanka’s strategic location as a major draw for investors.

The Chinese delegation, comprising representatives from 77 companies and led by Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao, expressed interest in both traditional industries and emerging fields like AI, robotics, and electronics.

Senior officials from the China Chamber of Commerce and the China International Chamber of Commerce for the Private Sector were present. The delegation will also attend the Sri Lanka-China Trade and Investment Forum in Colombo on May 30.
