Sri Lanka, ranked the No. 1 island in the world by global travel platform Big 7 Travel. The recognition comes as part of their annual list of the Top 50 Best Islands in the World, celebrating the beauty, diversity, and unique experiences offered by islands across the globe.
Big 7 Travel described Sri Lanka as an island that “has it all” – from sun-soaked golden beaches along its 833-mile coastline to misty mountains, centuries-old temples, lush tea plantations, and incredible wildlife. The accolade is a major endorsement for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, which is steadily recovering post-pandemic.
“This teardrop-shaped island off the southern coast of India is packed with adventure, beauty and culture,” the review stated, highlighting how tourists are often overwhelmed by the variety of experiences available – from relaxing beach-hopping to exploring colonial towns and ancient heritage sites.
One visitor, reflecting on a 2023 safari, shared their awe at encountering a large herd of elephants in Yala National Park, reinforcing the country’s reputation as a premier wildlife destination. Sri Lanka is home to approximately 6,000 elephants, many of which roam freely across the island.
The recognition also underscores Sri Lanka’s deep historical and cultural heritage. It echoes the words of famed explorer Marco Polo, who once described Sri Lanka as “the finest island of its size in all the world.” A modern-day traveler cited in the review remarked, “Despite being slightly smaller than Ireland, I explored more than half the island in just a week – from the west to the south. It really does have everything.”
Sri Lanka’s world-famous tea plantations were also singled out, with Big 7 noting the island’s scenic tea trails as a highlight for those who enjoy their morning cuppa.
Tourism authorities welcomed the announcement, viewing it as a timely boost to the country’s international image. With visa-free entry now extended to citizens from 40 countries, including India and China, Sri Lanka is aiming to attract more global travelers and reposition itself as a leading destination in Asia.
This ranking is expected to further strengthen Sri Lanka’s tourism brand, reminding the world that the island offers not just stunning landscapes, but also a rich blend of history, culture, adventure, and hospitality.
