“Sri Lanka Customs to Publicize Tax Offenders in Bold Crackdown”

In a major push for transparency and accountability, Sri Lanka Customs will begin publishing names of individuals and institutions found guilty of Customs violations and tax fraud on its official website.

The move, announced by Director General Sarath Nonis, aims to deter repeat offenders and strengthen compliance with trade laws.

A one-month notice will be given before implementation, with the initiative targeting those who treat fines as a cost of doing business. Nonis emphasized that the culture of impunity must end and that public disclosure is a stronger deterrent than financial penalties alone.

The measure is expected to boost State revenue collection and encourage ethical business practices, contributing to the country’s economic recovery. Offenders will be listed only after formal investigations under the Customs Ordinance, marking a decisive shift in Sri Lanka’s approach to tackling corruption and fraud in trade.
