Renewable firms are willing to provide electricity during the night peak with battery energy systems at 50 rupees a kilowatt hour, an industry official said, as the power utility attempts to cope with a surge in intermittent power which has undermined grid stability.
The price works out to around 16.6 US cents per unit. The Minister of Energy has said a new tariff will be offered for battery powered solar.Related Sri Lanka to offer tariff to buy solar energy in the night
The cash-strapped utility of the sovereign defaulted nation is only now getting finance to build battery energy storage system (BESS) systems. The CEB has history of delayed procurements, with bidders going to an appeal board and also courts.
However, if the private power producers supply their own batteries procurement could be speeded up.The government has to give a justifiable tariff for private companies to go to a bank and get financing for a battery system, Sri Lanka’s Federation of Renewable Energy Developers say.
The renewable with battery will be cheaper than diesel power but higher than coal. Most of the most expensive plants are run in Sri Lanka during the night peak.Sri Lanka’s grid has not been upgraded to accommodate a large volume of intermittent distributed renewable energy
