Sri Lanka Navy to resume marine security services

Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers have approved a proposal for the country’s Navy to provide maritime security services in the Red Sea region, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.

“Considering the knowledge and experience of the Sri Lanka Navy in relation to maritime security operations, it has been deemed appropriate to grant approval to the Sri Lanka Navy to idependently carry out maritime security operations,” Jayatissa told reporters.

Sri Lanka’s Navy previously provided such a service but this was handed over to private contractors in the island later, he said.

In 2010, the International Maritime Organization declared the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the region around the Somali Sea, as a high-risk zone due to pirate threats to international maritime traffic.
