Sri Lanka to Fully Implement Digital TV Services by 2029

The Ministry of Digital Economy has announced that digital television services in Sri Lanka will be fully implemented by 2029 under a project called DTTB (Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting).

The initiative for the project began in June 2025, following the signing of an engineering consultancy agreement with Japan’s JICA in April 2024. The project’s initiation phase is planned between 2026 and 2030, with the goal of completely transitioning from analog to digital broadcasting by 2030.

Once analog frequencies are released, they can be allocated to telecommunications and other digital economy sectors, generating additional revenue for the government.

Discussions about television digitalization have been ongoing since 2012. The Ministry noted that past delays and lack of focus hindered earlier attempts, despite support from Japan’s JICA. Notably, one of the objectives behind constructing the Lotus Tower was to facilitate digital television broadcasting
