Sri Lanka to launch e-NICs by April 2026

Electronic National Identity Cards (e-NICs) are expected to be issued by April 2026, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne said.

He said that the plan to digitize the ID process was initiated in 2012, aiming to establish a digital ID system.

Weeraratne highlighted that the current use of plastic ID cards impacts the ecosystem negatively and noted the need to shift to a digital ID platform.

The system is designed to customise Sri Lanka’s ID registration process through the MOSIP implementation solution.

However, a system like Modular Open Source Identity Platform (MOSIP) is essential, as digital ID is now rapidly evolving and plays a key role in supporting a secure and efficient ID platform.
