Sri Lanka to Map Rubber Lands to Meet EU Deforestation Rules

Sri Lanka will map and geo-locate rubber plantations owned by small estate holders nationwide to create a comprehensive database using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, Minister of Health and Media Nalinda Jayatissa announced.

The move comes in response to the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which Sri Lanka must comply with from December 31, 2025, to continue exporting rubber and related products to the EU—one of the country’s key markets.

“The aim is to ensure our rubber supply chains are proven not to contribute to deforestation,” Jayatissa told reporters. The cabinet has approved the project to establish a digital mapping and registration system for rubber lands, enabling traceability and compliance with international environmental standards.

The EUDR, designed to combat global deforestation and forest degradation, covers imports of agricultural commodities such as wood, rubber, cattle, coffee, cocoa, palm oil, and soybeans into the EU. By implementing GIS-based mapping, Sri Lanka seeks to safeguard its export markets while aligning with global sustainability goals.
