Sri Lanka marked a new milestone in its tourism revival with the launch of the Grand Serendib Colombo, the country’s first AI-powered hotel project, inaugurated on October 10 at the Shangri-La Hotel Colombo.
The event, attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath, celebrated both the 20th anniversary of ABEC, the project’s developer, and a new chapter in Sri Lanka’s smart tourism strategy.
Minister Herath hailed the initiative as a “significant investment in smart hospitality,” noting that artificial intelligence will drive operational efficiency, personalize guest experiences, and support sustainable resource management.
The project aligns with the Smart Tourism Strategy 2025, which seeks to position Sri Lanka as a technology-integrated destination. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, tourist arrivals rose 35% in the first nine months of 2025 to 1.7 million, generating over USD 2.8 billion in revenue.
Experts say AI-led innovations like Grand Serendib could help Sri Lanka attract high-value visitors and enhance competitiveness as the nation targets USD 10 billion in annual tourism income by 2030
