The country’s first and only wax museum is set to open in a few days at the historic Ehelepola Walawwa in Kandy, marking a significant addition to Sri Lanka’s cultural landscape.
In conjunction with the opening ceremony, an all-night Pirith chanting and alms-giving were held under the patronage of Mr. Pradeep Nilanga Dela, Diyawadana Nilame of the Sri Dalada Maligawa. The religious observances were organized to honour the Ehelepola family and to pay tribute to all those who contributed to the establishment of the museum.
The wax museum is expected to showcase the architecture, customs, culture, cuisine, industries, and arts of the Kandyan period. It has been carefully designed to provide visitors with an educational introduction to the rich heritage of that era.
The Ehelepola Walawwa, which was originally a noble residence, underwent significant changes during the colonial period when it was converted into a prison. The building remained under the control of the Prisons Department until it was recently transferred to the Urban Development Authority.
Following extensive renovations costing approximately Rs. 150 million, the site was officially handed over to the Sri Dalada Maligawa through a special grant.
