Sri Lanka’s agricultural production in June 2025 showed a mixed performance, with rice and coconut output rising, while tea, fish, and rubber declined, the Central Bank said.
The Central Bank’s Agriculture Sector Data Bulletin reported that paddy production for the 2025 Yala season is forecast at 2.19 million metric tons, up 10.8% from the previous Yala season. The overall paddy production for 2025 is estimated at 4.8 million metric tons, a 2.3% increase over 2024.
Coconut production rose 18.3% year-on-year in June, following a recovery that began in February, contributing to stronger export earnings from coconut-based products.
In contrast, fish production fell 20.6% due to lower marine and inland fishing activity, while tea output dropped 6.3% because of adverse weather. Tea exports, however, saw a slight rise compared to last year.
Rubber production also declined, with provisional data from the Rubber Development Department showing a year-on-year fall. Global natural rubber prices weakened in June across major exporters such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia, impacted by oversupply, high inventories, and trade uncertainties.
These trends highlight the challenges facing Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector amid changing weather patterns and global market pressures, emphasizing the need for resilient production strategies.
