Temple Trees to open for MICE events

The Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB) plans to open the 4,000-seat hall at Temple Trees, the Prime Minister’s official residence, for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE), according to Chairperson Dheera Hettiarachchi.

Speaking at the launch of Sri Lanka MICE Expo 2025, Hettiarachchi said the venue has not been publicly promoted for such events due to political restrictions but holds great potential for the industry.

She noted that Sri Lanka lacks modern convention centres that meet global standards. For comparison, the BMICH, one of the country’s main venues, seats only 1,600 people.

She also highlighted underused venues like the Magam Ruhunupura International Convention Centre (MRICC) in Hambantota and the Jaffna Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre, which could be revived through better promotion and support from the Urban Development Authority (UDA).

Sri Lanka is targeting 3 million tourists in 2025, with only 11% of current arrivals visiting for business. India, the country’s top tourism market, is expected to expand its outbound MICE travel to $13.4 billion by 2031.
