Three dead, thirteen injured in school van-tipper truck collision in Kuliyapitiya

A tragic road accident in Pallepitiya, Kuliyapitiya, claimed the lives of three people, including two schoolchildren, earlier this morning.

The collision occurred around 7:05 a.m. near the Wilpola Bridge, when a school van carrying students collided head-on with a tipper truck transporting sand.

Police confirmed that the deceased include the 64-year-old driver of the van and two schoolgirls, aged 12 and 13. Thirteen other students sustained injuries in the accident and have been admitted to Kuliyapitiya and Kurunegala hospitals for treatment. Several of the injured students are reported to be in critical condition.

The driver of the tipper truck involved in the collision has been arrested, authorities said.

Residents of the area described the accident as a devastating incident that shocked the local community. Police investigations into the cause of the collision are ongoing.
