UNDP promotes lesser known foods in Sri Lanka on Forests Day

UNDP in Sri Lanka, the World Food Programme and the ministry of environment have conducted a 6-week campaign, funded by the Global Environment Facility to spotlight the value of underutilized crops in the island.

Sri Lanka is one of only three countries in the world with a population of more than 300 people per square kilometre, which protects and maintains 30% of its original forest cover, UNDP said marking International Day of Forests on March 21.

“But with a rapidly increasing population, and a demand for land and natural resources, conserving our wealth of plant biodiversity has become a challenge.

“This is why UNDP in Sri Lanka, the United Nations World Food Programme, and the Ministry Of Environment with funding from the Global Environment Facility executed a 6-week campaign to spotlight the value of underutilized crops.“These Lesser Known Foods could hold the key to sustainable food systems and biodiversity protection
