US revokes 6,000+ visas in crackdown

The Trump administration has revoked more than 6,000 visas as part of a sweeping immigration crackdown, a move that has already sparked controversy both domestically and abroad.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) linked the decision to a recent fatal crash in Florida involving an undocumented immigrant truck driver.

According to DHS, around 4,000 visas were cancelled for individuals accused of breaking U.S. laws, primarily for assault, with others cited for driving under the influence and burglary.

An additional 200–300 visas were withdrawn on terrorism-related grounds, with officials alleging links to proscribed groups or involvement in “terrorist activities.”

The crackdown has also specifically targeted foreign students engaged in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. DHS claims such activism poses a threat to U.S. foreign policy interests and displays “pro-Hamas” and antisemitic tendencies.

President Donald Trump further escalated tensions with academia, accusing major U.S. universities of being “bastions of antisemitism” for tolerating campus protests in support of Palestine.

Civil rights groups and education leaders have condemned the measures, calling them politically motivated and discriminatory. International critics warned the move could chill academic freedom, damage U.S. higher education’s global standing, and inflame tensions in the Middle East.

The White House has defended the policy as a necessary step to safeguard national security and protect Americans from “foreign extremists and unlawful agitators.”
