Over 12,000 traffic violations identified via CCTV in Colombo

Sri Lanka Police launch advanced Traffic Violation Software

Since February last year, a total of 12,918 motorists have been identified for violating traffic rules through the CCTV system in Colombo.

The Police monitor traffic offences using CCTV cameras, and violations are addressed by the CCTV Division. Police launched the special programme aimed at identifying motorists violating traffic rules through the CCTV system in Colombo on February 1, 2024.

Captured video evidence of traffic offences is forwarded to relevant police stations across the country and fine papers for the offences were issued to the relevant drivers.

In a move to enhance the process and incorporate modern technology, Prima Management Services (Pvt) Ltd introduced the ‘Traffic Violation Management Software’ to the Sri Lanka Police yesterday. The software is designed to streamline the handling of traffic violations.

The event was attended by Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya, Senior DIG Ranmal Kodithuvakku, Colombo DIG N.P. Liyanage, DIG of the CCTV Division P. Gamalath, Director Police Media SSP Buddhika Manatunga, and other senior police officials, along with Krishantha Perera, General Manager of Prima.

Police said that the new software will enable faster and more accurate action against traffic violators.

Using the software, officers need only to enter the vehicle number and the offence type, after which a message is sent to the relevant police station for the issuance of a detailed fine sheet.

If the driver is not at the location where the offence occurred, they can collect and pay the fine at their nearest police station. The software also provides updates in all three official languages and allows for unlimited uploading of footage related to offences.

Once an offence is entered into the system, it cannot be removed until the legal proceedings are completed, ensuring full accountability and transparency in handling violations, police said.

Meanwhile, Police plan to expand the installation of CCTV cameras in key areas to enhance their ability to monitor traffic and assist in crime investigations.
