The US will charge a 20 percent tax from Vietnam on imports and the country will also be able to ‘transship’ goods to America at 40 percent, President Donald Trump has said in a social media post.
Vietnam’s original Trump tariff was 46 percent, compared to 44 percent for Sri Lanka. The tariff is currently reduced to 10 percent until July 9.
“It will be a Great Deal of Cooperation between our two Countries,” Trump said on his truthsocial.com platform.
“The Terms are that Vietnam will pay the United States a 20 percent Tariff on any and all goods sent into our Territory, and a 40% Tariff on any Transshipping. In return, Vietnam will do something that they have never done before, give the United States of America TOTAL ACCESS to their Markets for Trade.”
It is not clear what Trump meant by ‘transship’ but if it means re-exports, Vietnam will be able to export third country products to the US at only 40 percent. No value addition criteria were mentioned in the post.
