Heavy rainfall hits Delhi

Delhi experienced heavy rainfall this morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert, warning of continued showers throughout the day.

The downpour has already led to widespread water logging and traffic disruptions across key areas, including Ring Road, South Delhi, and arterial roads connecting central and east Delhi.

A newly released video showed a decades-old tree collapsing onto vehicles, resulting in multiple injuries and highlighting the impact of the heavy rains. Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys carefully and consider alternative routes in waterlogged areas such as GTK Depot, Jahangirpuri, and Adarsh Nagar.

Meanwhile, authorities are closely monitoring the Yamuna River, which has surged to 204.43 metres at the Old Railway Bridge—just 0.07 metres below the official warning level of 204.50 metres. The danger mark is set at 205.3 metres, and evacuations will be initiated if water levels reach 206 metres.

The surge is primarily due to significant water releases from the Wazirabad and Hathnikund Barrages, influenced by heavy rainfall in upstream regions of Haryana and Uttarakhand.

Currently, approximately 31,250 cusecs of water are being released from Wazirabad and 25,126 cusecs from Hathnikund Barrage, with the water expected to reach Delhi in 48 to 50 hours.

Authorities have urged residents to stay alert, avoid low-lying and flood-prone areas, and follow official advisories as the city braces for continued rainfall and rising river levels.
