Sri Lankan Rupee Eases as Yields Fall

Sri Lanka’s rupee closed slightly weaker at 332.75/80 against the US dollar spot. This marks a fractional depreciation from the 332.65/70 level recorded in the previous session.

According to Central Bank of Sri Lanka data, the local currency has faced steady pressure. The rupee recorded a total year-to-date depreciation of 6.8% by late October.

Concurrently, domestic bond yields fell across multiple maturities in secondary market trading. Treasury bonds maturing in 2029, 2030, and 2031 all registered lower yields as buying interest shifted.

Dealers reported active matching and solid liquidity in the market during the session. However, a Treasury bill auction saw yields rise marginally on shorter tenors, with only 65.9 billion rupees sold out of an offered 90 billion.
