The state-owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) enacted a fresh fuel price hike, raising 92 Octane Petrol by Rs. 10 to Rs. 424 per litre and Auto Diesel by Rs. 5 to Rs. 397 per litre. The upward adjustment directly reflects mounting global crude volatility and rising import costs.
This increase introduces at a delicate juncture, as headline inflation reached 8.3% in October—breaching the Central Bank’s upper target boundary of 7% for the fourth consecutive month. Analysts warn that this will fuel secondary cost-push inflation across transport and manufacturing sectors, potentially forcing the Central Bank to hold interest rates higher for longer to anchor market expectations.
