Justice Murdu Fernando next Chief Justice

The Constitutional Council (CC) has approved President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recommendation to appoint Supreme Court Justice Murdu Fernando as the next Chief Justice.

She will succeed Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, who will retire on December 2.

Justice Fernando is the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court. She joined the Attorney General’s Department in 1985 as a State Counsel. She rose through its ranks to become Senior Additional Solicitor General in 2014 and was appointed as a Supreme Court Justice on March 9, 2018.

She was also appointed a President’s Counsel while serving at the AG’s Department.

A past pupil of Princes of Wales’s College, Moratuwa, Justice Fernando obtained her Bachelor of Law degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo. She is the eldest daughter of former principals E.M.C. Fernando and Mrs Fernando.
