
Only 14% of ETF members active by end 2024

Only 14.11 percent of member accounts in the Employees’ Trust Fund (ETF) were active at the end of 2024, according to the Central Bank (CB).
The CB stated, “Out of 16.3 million ETF member accounts, only 2.3 million accounts were active at the end of 2024.”
Despite this low activity rate, ETF’s asset base experienced significant growth, increasing by 12.7 percent year-on-year (YoY) to reach Rs. 591.3 billion at the close of 2024.
The number of employers contributing to the fund also saw an uptick, rising to 80,008 at the end of 2024 from 74,927 at the end of 2023. The total member balance of the ETF grew by 11.9 percent YoY, reaching Rs. 564.3 billion at the end of 2024.
The total contributions to the ETF increased by 12.9 percent YoY, amounting to Rs. 42.0 billion. Meanwhile, total superannuation benefits paid to members decreased by 12.7 percent to Rs. 33.4 billion during 2024.
Investments made by the ETF saw a 12.8 percent increase, reaching Rs. 581.1 billion by the end of 2024. A significant portion of these investments, 94.7 percent, was allocated to government securities, which grew by 14.7 percent YoY to reach Rs. 550.5 billion at the end of 2024.
The ETF reported an 11.9 percent return on investment for its member balances in 2024.
