The signature smiles and world-renowned hospitality of SriLankan Airlines’ cabin crew are no longer enough to keep the national carrier’s reputation aloft.
While thousands of passengers continue to praise the attentive, warm, and deeply authentic service delivered by front-line flight attendants, a growing structural rot threathens to eclipse these achievements.
The recent arrest and prolonged detention of a 23-year-old female flight attendant in Japan for shoplifting has sent shockwaves through the aviation industry.
Caught on security cameras stealing minor retail items including onigiri rice snacks at an Aeon shopping mall near Narita International Airport, the SL crew member was promptly detained by Japanese authorities.
Moreover SriLankan Airlines Limited posted a pre-tax loss of 35.6 billion rupees for the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, hit by soaring jet fuel costs, West Asia flight disruptions, and currency depreciation
The flag carrier’s losses widened from a net loss of 12.0 billion rupees in the corresponding period of 2025/26, pushing the airline deeper into negative equity of 351.5 billion rupees as total liabilities reached 561.4 billion rupees against assets of 209.9 billion rupees.
